The headache Creator

Last Update: 12-3-2023

Your body isn’t out to hurt you. It is an intelligence system that wants nothing but the best for you no matter how you treat it. Give your body a little bit more credit than it being a broken down machine. I believe that illness is a feedback mechanism that let’s us know when something is emotionally bothering us under the surface that we may or may not be conscious of. Are there physical factors involved in illness? Absolutely. Can studies and evidence-based medicine be the only pieces of the puzzle that matter? I think not. Gather as much information as you can physically, emotionally and spiritually before making any decisions involving your body. Be your best advocate.

AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE HEADACHE CREATOR

The headache creator is in a chair tied-up. A torturous figure walks into the room, with the intention of destroying/humiliating the headache creator. This torturous figure walks over to the table, in front of the tied-up headache creator and views the spread of destructive weapons laid out on the table. Before the torturer can even begin their tirade, the headache creator yells “WAIT! Untie me and I will do it!” Confused, the torturer unties the headache creator and the headache creator sees the weapon spread and picks up the hammer. With excitement, enthusiasm and approval, the torturer takes a seat, makes some popcorn and gets ready for the show.

After a millisecond of contemplation from the headache creator of “Do I really want to do this?” the torture beings. The headache creator takes the hammer and swiftly hits themselves on the head. Depending on the specific mood of the headache creator and/or the feedback from the torturer, the headache creator may decide to hit themselves in one place or in a variety of different places on their head. Envision “wack-a-mole”. The torturer sits in awe and amazement. They think “Wow, talk about an easy day at the office. I don’t even have to carry out the punishment today. They did it for me.”

Eventually, the headache creator feels like an adequate punishment was given or enough information was extracted around their short-coming and stops. They state: “I’ve had enough.” The torturer nodes their head in excitement, agrees and releases the headache creator. As the headache creator leaves, they hear the faint voice of the torturer’s threat, “Once you do it again, I will come get you.”

THERAPEUTIC CONSIDERATIONS

The word “creator” is used very intentionally. If an individual can live out the illustration of The Headache Creator over and over again, it is CREATED. Here are questions that I encourage you to journal about and/or discuss with your counselor.

*Do not sit and think about these questions. Get the thoughts out of your body through writing or speech. A true, unbiased, analysis of oneself can not happen within just the contents of one’s own mind.

  1. Who is the headache creator?

  2. Who is the torturer?

  3. Who hired the torturer?

  4. Does the torturer know that they were hired or know that they are on the job?

  5. What weapons does the torturer have? Tongue-lashing? Shame? Physical Abuse?

  6. Why does the headache creator punish themselves?

  7. What is an adequate amount of punishment?

  8. Is punishment effective in preventing poor/unacceptable behavior? Do people reoffend even if harsh punishment is given/created?

  9. Do you know how to work through the emotion of shame/guilt?

  10. How would the relationship change with the torturer if the headache creator refused to punish themselves anymore?

  11. What made the torturer become a torturer? Does a human being without significant trauma become a torturer? Are some people born evil?

  12. Can the torturer and the headache creator co-exist or have a loving relationship if the torturer refuses to change?

  13. What is the headache creator’s attachment to a specific torturer?

  14. Can there be a hero without a villain? Why does the headache creator need to be a hero?
